We are getting closer and closer to crossing the line of the future, and the aeronautical world never ceases to surprise us thanks to technology and its use within the sector.
That is why the development of a futuristic laser communication terminal is foreseen, thanks to the alliance between Airbus and VDL Group. Although the invention seems to be straight out of ‘Star Wars’, everything seems to indicate that it is a reality.
By 2024, the two companies are joining forces to demonstrate a prototype and the first flight test. In this respect, VDL and Airbus are preparing to take a step into the future.
Thanks to UltraAir, it will be possible to share large amounts of data with laser beams, in front of a network system of ground stations and: “satellites in geostationary orbit 36,000 km above the Earth”.
This transmission will travel in a matter of seconds so there will be a low probability of interference. Making this system stable and quite accurate.
“In this way, UltraAir will allow military aircraft and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) to connect within a multi-domain combat cloud thanks to laser-based satellite constellations such as Airbus’ SpaceDataHighway.” They reported from the company.
Although it is initially intended for military aviation, in the long term we may see UltraAir on commercial aircraft.
