Held since 1948, the Farnborough Airshow has become a crucial event for the aerospace industry. Over the years, it has been the venue for major launches and demonstrations of advanced technologies. Its significance lies in its ability to bring together leading industry players, facilitating collaboration and idea exchange that drive innovation and progress.
This year, from July 22 to 26 in Hampshire, UK, Farnborough 2024 has focused on sustainability. As today is the last day of the event, here are some of the most important announcements made during this historic event.
Airbus and Boeing: Key Players in Sustainability
Leading companies such as Airbus, Boeing, Rolls-Royce, RTX, GKN, and GE Aviation showcased their latest aircraft and advanced technologies.
Airbus A350 and A321XLR

Airbus introduced its new passenger aircraft, the A321 XLR, focused on sustainability. This single-aisle aircraft burns 30% less fuel and has a range of 4,700 nautical miles, surpassing many long-haul competitors.
Sue Partridge, from Airbus’s Wing of Tomorrow program, explained that improvements in wing physics and the development of sustainable fuels, such as hydrogen, are crucial for increasing aircraft efficiency. The A321 XLR’s efficiency benefits airlines seeking more economical long-haul flights with narrow-body aircraft. Additionally, the Airbus A350, intended for routes like London to Mumbai, features a lighter composite wing compared to traditional metal structures.
Boeing and Expanded Luggage Capacity
This year, Boeing did not present new aircraft due to its safety and manufacturing crisis. Instead, it highlighted updates to its 777 aircraft range, particularly the 777X.
Laura Fitzgerald, Regional Cabin Marketing Director at Boeing, explained that the 777X offers two types of cabin architecture: one that creates a sense of height and another that provides more space or width. The 777X has doubled luggage capacity and reduced closing forces by over 40%. Additionally, larger windows positioned higher on the fuselage have been added to enhance exterior visibility and passenger experience.
Other announcements during the event include:
- Lilium Jet, an innovative electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft
- COMAC C919, an emerging competitor in the commercial aircraft market
“Pioneers of Tomorrow”

The “Pioneers of Tomorrow” program, focused on STEM, aims to inspire and motivate the next generation of leaders in aerospace, space, and defense technology. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, an area that continues to grow as graduates in these fields are in high demand in the labor market, as are projects within these areas.
The Farnborough International Airshow 2024 is a transformative event for the aerospace industry, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation. With the participation of industry giants and the presentation of the latest technologies and aircraft, Farnborough 2024 will continue to be an essential platform for advancement and collaboration in the global aerospace sector.
