PLAY Airlines will compete directly with Icelandair, the only transatlantic airline operator in Iceland today, after the low-cost Icelandic airline WOW Air, closed its doors in March this year.
Ticket sales are planned to start this month through their new website www.flyplay.com, and they are giving away 1,000 free tickets for the first customers to register on their website.
This new company is led by a group of Icelandic investors who have made public their intention to launch a new airline to replace Wow Air. The new investors chose Arnar Már Magnusson, former vice president of WOW, as CEO of PLAY Airlines, to achieve his purpose which is to maintain the same low-cost operating model that WOW governed, and also offer transportation services for loading using the hold of their planes.
PLAY will begin to operate with Airbus A320 aircraft, and they also want to include some A321 units in the fleet as it is considered an excellent option because of its fuel consumption, load capacity and to offer passengers greater comfort.
The first routes will only be through Europe, but they plan to make flights to the United States of America in the middle of the year 2020. Westbound flights across the Atlantic are expected to begin next spring, and although Arnar Mar refused to give details on what the specific destinations will be, he said that PLAY plans to have ten planes within the first three years of operation.
